The Power of a Plan.

How Life Care benefits you.

When you choose a Life Plan Community like The Woodlands, you put a plan in place for a worry-free future. You get the lifestyle along with the amenities you deserve, all with long-term peace of mind for the decades ahead. If your health should change after joining the community, you have seamless access to the full continuum of convenient healthcare services right on campus, including five-star rated skilled nursing and rehabilitation, assisted living and memory care. However, the best time to explore a Life Plan contract is when you’re healthy.

How it works.

Through the payment of a one-time entrance fee and predictable monthly service fees, independent living residents are guaranteed priority access to on-site assisted living, memory care and skilled nursing for as long as they need it.

One of our residents put it this way: “I’m taken care of—always.”

As a Life Plan Community, The Woodlands at Furman delivers exceptional financial protection from the rising costs of higher care in the future with the valuable Life Care contract. For peace of mind, you’ll have access to upscale memory care, assisted living and skilled nursing — all at a predictable rate when you first moved to independent living.

How it benefits you and your partner.

At the Woodlands, because of the onsite staff dedicated to our assisted living, memory care or skilled nursing facilities, couples can return to being loving partners again, instead of being full-time caregivers.

How is it different from long-term care insurance?

Do you already have Long-Term Care insurance? If so, combining existing Long-Term Care insurance with a new Life Care contract at The Woodlands provides the strongest protection possible. Without this combination, Long-Term Care insurance will pay your healthcare costs if you need services, but it won’t help you source high-quality caregivers or ensure priority access to a top-tier network of skilled nursing professionals, assisted living, memory care communities or rehabilitation services, which is where The Woodlands’ full continuum of care enters the picture.

The good news is, if you already have Long-Term Care insurance combined with a Life Care contract from a Life Plan Community like The Woodlands, you get priority access to a full continuum of care. Plus, couples can count on being close to each other on the same campus.

If you don’t have Long-Term Care insurance, don’t worry. That is because a Life Care contract is the next best thing to Long-Term Care insurance. The Woodlands gives you priority access to a full continuum of care and keeps your monthly living expenses predictably the same, whether you need just a little help or a lot.

FAQs

Does a Life Plan contract have tax benefits?

YES! There is a pre-paid medical tax benefit recognized by the IRS for both the entrance fee and monthly fee. The year the entrance fee (the cost of the residence) is paid, a portion can be deducted, attributed to future care. While living in the community, a percentage of the monthly fee is considered deductible for this purpose as well. Each year, The Woodlands will calculate the cost of operating its care center and share what percentage may be deducted. To maximize tax benefits, speak with a tax professional.

How does a Life Plan Community fit into my estate planning?

An important part of planning for the future is thinking about your care needs. How will your needs be funded, and who will oversee those care needs? And most importantly, how can I maintain control over these decisions and not burden my family? Living in a Life Plan Community addresses all of these issues. With your decision of choosing to live in a Life Plan Community, should you need assisted living, memory care or skilled nursing care, these are all pre-planned. And all at a predictable monthly fee to protect your assets.

Does Life Care work with my Long-Term Care insurance?

If you have a Long-Term Care insurance policy, you might be eligible to receive benefits if you need assisted living, memory care or skilled nursing care. Your policy may work hand in hand with Life Care and pay earned benefits directly to you — but you should consult your insurance carrier for specific details about your policy. However, without access to a full continuum of care, couples can be split up if one requires specialty care. That is much less likely to happen in a Life Care Community.

What is an entrance fee?

Your entrance fee is a one-time payment based on the size of the residence you choose. Payment of this fee entitles you to lifetime residence at The Woodlands at Furman and the availability of unlimited care. Entrance fees may be partially refundable depending on the plan selected. Ask your Life Care advisors for specifics.

What if I run out of money?

The Woodlands is a not-for-profit organization. To the extent possible, while keeping the financial health of the community in mind, we pledge to provide viable options to those whose resources become depleted. When an entrance fee resident runs out of money due to no fault of their own, an advisory board will request the family apply for assistance from our community's Benevolence Fund.

What do the monthly service fees cover?

The independent living monthly service fees vary based on the size of your residence and the number of occupants. This comprehensive fee covers a variety of services and amenities, including your meal plan, maintenance, housekeeping, utilities, scheduled transportation, concierge services, fitness center, activities and events and much more.
