At The Woodlands at Furman, residents rave about local dining options and on-site dining both. Considering a move into a brand-new villa, an independent living apartment, or other senior living options? You’ll find a community with a smorgasbord of delicious food options. We asked residents Bart and Stephanie Schmidt to reveal their top picks for good eats at The Woodlands and in the neighborhood.
The Evergreen Dining Hall and Lounge at The Woodlands is the Schmidts’ go-to spot for a tasty lunch. They like the dining hall’s quietness and its inviting layout, and they love the variety of food offered throughout the week.
If you want a casual meal or a bite on the go, choose from the delectable items on the takeout menu or the buffet. Featuring down-home country cooking, the daily buffet offers choices like slow-roasted beef, chicken and dumplings, and okra with stewed tomatoes. Bart and Stephanie say they are partial to the chicken salad but love trying new foods, too.
What keeps the Schmidts coming back, though, is the incredible menu selection. If you can’t find what you’re looking for on the buffet, Chef Evan Faucette has created an à la carte menu with mouthwatering classic favorites and modern twists, from the grass-fed filet mignon and French-cut Australian lamb chops to the wild-caught Atlantic lobster tail and salmon. Bart and Stephanie both love the filet mignon and say that the salmon is always perfect.
Add a sweet exclamation point to your meal by ordering favorites like the blueberry pie or the cinnamon Oreo sundae. If you have dietary restrictions, don’t worry. Chef Faucette’s team finds creative ways to meet special dietary needs without sacrificing flavor.
Does staying in for a hot meal sound like the perfect evening? The fully-equipped kitchens in either our brand-new villas or our independent living apartments have all you need to cook up a delightful winter’s feast, including a stove, a refrigerator, and a microwave. Whether you’re a noodle-novice or a pot-au-feu-pro, each of our spacious kitchens offers plenty of room to move around and enough counter space to let you tackle even the most complicated recipes.
The Schmidts call the kitchen one of their top three dining picks because it’s a great spot to enjoy breakfast together, which they do nearly every day. And when they don’t feel like going out, they head to their kitchen for a light dinner.
If you want to eat out or pick up a to-go meal, The Woodlands at Furman is close to delicious restaurants like Karrie’s Deli & Pub, located less than three miles away. Try the “Upstate’s best Reuben” and other deli favorites like BLTs, chicken salad sandwiches, and a variety of subs.
Though the Schmidts love the sandwiches at Karrie’s, it’s The Hare & Hound Pub that pulls them in for hearty fare. Well worth the 30-minute drive to Landrum, the restaurant serves pub classics and traditional American cuisine, too, from options like the Guinness beef pie and fish-and-chips to chicken pot pie and buffalo wings.
Craving a steak? The Peddler is situated only four miles from The Woodlands and is known for its salad bar and juicy rib eyes. You can also find a wealth of options in Greenville and Travelers Rest, from Sidewall Pizza and Farmhouse Tacos to Saffron Indian Cuisine and Lieu’s Chinese Bistro.
Of course, access to great dining options is only one of many reasons to love it here. The Woodlands also helps to make retirement living exceptional with the following:
